    FAQ : Twisted Pair
Why use CAT5 over traditional AV solutions?

Cost: Pennies a foot.

Simplicity: Easier to crimp than BNC connectors. Easy to connect to jack. Simple to run through conduit.

Performance: Becoming the signal routing standard.

What is A/V over Twisted-Pair cabling, and how is it different from traditional signal management?
A/V over twisted-pair is the transmission and distribution of audio, video, and control signals over wiring traditionally used for data networking and IP telephone systems. This wiring is commonly known as UTP, or unshielded twisted-pair. Special interfacing equipment is needed to send video and audio signals over UTP wiring. UTP-based A/V systems are appealing for many applications because they offer numerous advantages in terms of implementation and cost, and deliver performance comparable to systems using RGB coaxial cabling.

What applications can the twisted-pair products be used for?
The twisted-pair product line is ideal for business, hotel, sports and entertainment, healthcare, education, rental and staging, home, legal, government, worship, retail, and transportation. Twisted-pair is preferred for such applications because of low cost, convenience of installation and space limitations.

How do the Twisted-Pair products work?
In a basic system, the twisted-pair transmitter formats the RGB video output into signals specifically for transmission over twisted-pair cabling. Then a twisted-pair receiver, at the end of the twisted-pair cable run, then converts these signals back into RGB video for display.

What kind of A/V signals can be sent over twisted-pair products?
Analog video signals such as component or computer video can be sent over a single twisted-pair cable up to 1000-ft. using Teq AV/IT’s Twisted-Pair Transmitters / Receivers along with a stereo audio signal.

What makes the Twisted-Pair products easier to install than other tradition products?
Twisted-pair A/V systems are easier to install due to the light-weight small cabling as well as the simple and inexpensive terminations. Also, twisted-pair cabling is easier to conceal from view and feed through conduit than coaxial cable.

What equipment is used in a twisted-pair system?
A twisted-pair video and audio system requires at least one transmitter to convert A/V signals to be transmitted over twisted-pair cabling, and at least one receiver to convert the signals back.

Are Teq Gear twisted pair products compatible with other manufacturers twisted-pair products?
All transmitters, receivers, and distribution equipment must be provided by the same manufacturer. Each manufacturer has implemented a different specific technology for signal formatting and conversion that is not compatible with products from other manufacturers.

Does Teq Gear offer customized Twisted-Pair systems?
The Teq Gear Twist-Pair product line offers 4 transmitters and 5 receivers which allow the installer to mix and match the devices for a custom configuration to meet any applications specific needs.

What is the maximum distance a signal can be transmitted over CAT5 cable with the twisted pair product line?
Maximum transmission distance is up to 1000-ft. with Teq Gear Twisted-Pair product line.

How do Baluns differ from TeqAV/IT's twisted-pair receivers?
"Baluns are either passive extensions of video signals or just plain conversion of signals into differential pair. They do not correct any of the loss or artifacts that you see with video transmission over UTP (twisted pair cable). Because of this, they are limited in terms resolution and distance.

Teq AV/IT twisted pair products are active CAT5 drivers which allow gain and equalization adjustment to overcome loss and have skew adjustment for color separation. Transmission distances are higher, 500-ft or up to 1000-ft, depending on the model and the ability to transmit at full resolution of 1280x1024 or 1600x1200.

What is the suggested CAT5 cable for use with the Twisted-Pair products?
We recommend using any inexpensive unshielded CAT5/5e.

What is the pin-out of the CAT5 cabling in a Twisted-Pair system?
Straight through or T568B CAT5 Specification pin-out is used.

What is skew?
The timing differences in the arrival of the RGB colors on the display. Such color misalignment can adversely effect the sharpness and detail of the picture. Teq Gear twisted-pair have skew adjustment to compensate for such timing differences over long cable runs. To avoid compensation, low-skew twisted-pair cable can be used.

What is CAT5e cable?
Similar to standard CAT5 cable, but is enhanced to support speeds up to 1000 megabits per second.

What is CAT5 cable?
Category 5 cable, commonly known as CAT5, is an unshielded twisted-pair type cable designed for high signal integrity. The actual standard defines specific electrical properties of the wire, but it is most commonly known as being rated for its Ethernet capability of 100 Mbit/s. Its specific standard designation is EIA/TIA-568. CAT5 cable typically has three twists per inch of each twisted pair of 24 gauge copper wires within the cable.
