In the early 90's, Ethernet
running on coaxial cables was replaced with twisted-pair cables known as
CAT5. Video and audio were late to transition to this technology primarily
due to high bandwidth of signals and emphasis on quality.
However in last few years, the new
developments in the semiconductor industry have made it possible to
transmit high-resolution or high definition video and audio signals over a
single twisted-pair CAT5 or CAT6 cable. With support for UXGA
resolution computer video or 1080i high definition component video and
digital stereo audio, signal transmission over coaxial cable is becoming
old fashioned.
